At bread co we have this “meal of shared responsibility” and one of the options is to pay as much as you can at the time. Today this guy came in, looking all scraggly, and he comes up to Alaina and tries to explain to her that he only has $2 but she didn’t know how the meal thing worked so I took over and rang him up. I asked him how much he had and he was so embarrassed to tell me he only had $2 and then I asked him if he was eating here and he responds “if that’s ok with you guys” as if he was unwanted. then I went and made his food myself, filling his soup bowl all the way to the top and giving him more sides than advised. By that point I felt so awful, I’ve never had someone come into bread co that couldn’t afford the original cost. Since we were close to closing, I filled a huge bag with pastries and bagels and went and gave it to him. He seemed a little ashamed to take it but I told him it was no problem. He said “I can’t even explain how much I appreciate this” and I said to have a good night. He replied “well you just made it a lot better, thank you.” Tonight was so eye opening and it crushed my heart. I’m just thankful I could be the reason his night turned around. I ended up not getting out of work until 11:30 so I was speeding home and I noticed a cop behind me. I was doing 75 and then slowed down to 65. The cop got right on my ass like he was going to pull me over and I had a small heart attack waiting for his lights to come on. Then I see him put his blinker on, get over, and pass me. I know for a fact he saw me speeding because i didnt even notice he was a cop until he got right behind me. i guess that was good karma.
